12 Hacks to Help You Stick to Your Workouts

Sticking to a consistent gym routine can seem about as mystical as unicorns and comfortable bras. There are periods when finding the time and motivation to workout feels easy, but then there are others where it feels impossible.

What gives?

Well let’s first acknowledge why it’s hard to stick to them in the first place.

Your job.

Taking care of kids and family.

No energy because of a long day at work.

You don't know what to do at the gym and can never make a class.

It's uncomfortable, especially at first (being sore sucks, let's be real).

Happy hour usually sounds more fun.

It requires you to do more laundry.

There are only so many hours in the day and you can't do it all.

The gym is intimidating… why would you voluntarily embarrass yourself?

It can get expensive (hello $32 a class...).

This list could go on, but you get the idea. Being an adult requires daily re-prioritization of what is and isn't important. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, the gym is usually one of the first things on the chopping block because paychecks, kids, and social well-being don't directly depend on it. 

It also tends to get shoved aside because it's not a habit and we rely on motivation to keep us on track. The problem with motivation is that it's rarely available when you need it. And it's not because you don't care enough, or that there is something wrong with you, it's just the reality of how motivation works. 

So instead of waiting for inspiration to strike to get back on your workout routine, try one (or multiple!) of these workout routine hacks.

 

 
  1. Workout at the same time every day.

    This does not have to be in the morning or night either. Experiment with what time of day works best for you and stick to it.

  2. Pick workouts that you enjoy.

    If you hate spin class, don’t go to spin class. When you try to force a workout you don’t enjoy, you won’t stick with it. Just do the ones you like!

  3. Lay out your workout clothes.

    Yes this requires effort the day before, but it really works. The less thinking you need to do in the morning, the better.

  4. Keep it personal. Do it for you.

    Your workouts and your reasons for working out are personal. Don’t let anyone dictate this for you.

  5. Buy new workout clothes or shoes.

    Chances are your sports bra needs to be replaced anyway... do your workout wardrobe a favor and replace something.

  6. Sign up for a race (drag a friend along).

    Committing to a future goal is one of the best ways to stay on track. Even if it’s just a 5k, the race will help provide some much needed motivation.

  7. Set a goal and reward yourself.

    This can be anything from a smoothie to a new outfit. Acknowledging your day to day efforts is important in the long haul.

  8. Hire a personal trainer at your gym.

    Paying someone else might just be the best form of accountability. You will also learn some new exercises to add to your arsenal.

  9. Schedule your weekly workouts.

    Put them in your calendar as an appointment that you can't miss, and make sure to honor it!

  10. Get a workout or gym buddy.

    Everything is more fun with a friend, and you are more likely to show up if you know that someone is waiting for you.

  11. Try new things, mix it up occasionally.

  12. Go even if you don't feel like it.

    You don't have to feel like crushing weights to go crush weights. Stick to your gym habit and your future self will thank you.
