How to Wash Your Sneakers

The benefits of a regular workout routine are basically endless. Not only will you lose weight, tone up, and look better, you will also improve your sleep quality, increase your energy levels, and help prevent bone degeneration as you age.

It’s essentially a magic pill that heals all the things, both inside and out.

But one noticeable (and admittedly very superficial but also very annoying) draw back, is that your sneakers get real dirty. Fast. Gym floors tend to be grimy even if they are cleaned often, and outside workouts cause you to accumulate a ton of dirt and pollen.

Your new shoes will start looking old and worn well before they need to be replaced.

But before you spend your hard earned dollars on new shoes that you don’t need (although, if they are a different color…), try washing them! They will look like new with pretty minimal effort.

Prep:

  • Odor Removal: To get rid of odors that may be hanging around from spin class, put 1-2 tbsp of baking soda in each shoe and let it sit overnight. Discard in the morning.

  • Remove Laces: Remove the laces and place them in a mesh laundry bag or a pillow case (keeps them from getting tangled).

  • Spot Treatment: Use a spot stain remover such as OxiClean for any pesky spots you may have accumulated. Leave for ~10 minutes or as directed on bottle.

Wash:

You can either hand wash, or toss them in the washing machine. Yep, you read that right, you can machine wash your sneakers (but be sure to heed these instructions)!

  • Machine Wash: Place sneakers and laces (in mesh bag) in the machine and wash on the delicate setting with cold water. Add 2-4 towels in as well so that the shoes don’t bang around the side of the machine. Be sure to use a liquid detergent, powders can get stuck in the sole of your shoe which is no good.

  • Hand Wash: Using cold water, scrub your sneakers and laces with either liquid detergent or hand soap. The free tooth brush you get from the dentist but don’t ever use works great for this. Be sure to rinse throughly and drain excess water before you set out to dry.

Dry:

With both methods always air dry, never put them in the dryer!

  • Set shoes outside in the sun if possible (or on a window sill if you do not have access to outdoor space).

  • Once shoes are fully dry (time varies depending on what climate you live in, and hand washed shoes generally need at least 24 hours), simply re-add shoe laces.
